Hitting the Foodmarkets

It’s no secret that Amsterdam is home to some great restaurants, but for a deliciously authentic taste of the Netherlands why not head to one of the city’s excellent food markets? Brimming with local produce, the Noordermarkt on Saturday morning is a firm favorite with the locals who come to stock up for the weekend. Fresh vegetables, beautifully fragrant herbs, speciality cheeses, oysters and artisanal breads are just a few of the delicacies on offer.

Noordermarkt is in the centre of the Jordaan area and its lively, energetic vibe makes for a great place to stop and soak up the atmosphere as the locals wake up to the weekend.

Across town in the south of the city, situated on an impossibly romantic square, you’ll find the Zuidermarkt – famed for the quality of its produce.  And for those in pursuit of global cuisine, the Food Hallen is a must. Don’t miss the Netherlands world famous croquettes and bitterballen here. Once you’ve tired of sampling the many options on offer (it could be some time), there is a lovely indoor courtyard where you can grab a seat and take it all in – a great option on a rainy day.

The Albert Cuyp market in the Pijp is also establishing itself on the foodie map – but first and foremost, head here for Dutch classics such as Herring, Fried Fish, Poffertjes, or Fries!
